Location: Olde City, Phila, PA
Phone: (215) 627-2500 Overall Rating (1 to 10): 9 What I’d Do To Improve the Place: Only 2 beers on tap. Yikes! I'd like to see a few more beers on tap. Granted, Warmdaddy's has plenty of quality bottled beers available, but there really is nothing like a nice cold good draught and red hot blues. |

As the legend goes, Robert Johnson went down to the fabled "crossroads" in Mississippi and met up with the devil where he sold his soul for enough "mojo" to make him the best blues guitar player to ever walk the earth. The closest thing to the "crossroads" that we have here in the good ol' City of Brotherly Love is without a doubt, Warmdaddy's on Front Street. I was immediately impressed with this establishment because it creates a nice atmosphere for enjoying live blues and jazz music. There are a few venue's around Philly where you can occasionally catch live blues and jazz acts, but they're almost always "rough around the edges." Upon entering Warmdaddy's, you immediately encounter the host/hostess station. Directly in front of you is the beginning of the bar which runs half-way up the left hand wall of the building. This big ol' wooden bar probably accommodates close to 20 patrons. On the right hand side of the establishment, across from the bar, is the dining area, where tables and chairs provide a great view of the stage. The stage is located in the right hand-rear corner of Warmdaddy's. To the left of the stage, there are about 8 tables and chairs that provide a great side view of the live act, especially if you like being "close to the action." Warmdaddy's has recognized that the blues/jazz talent in Philadelphia is "a bit thin" so they actively solicit quality national acts to come to their stage and put on a show. Hey, there is no argument that Philly is the birthplace of do-wop and American Bandstand, but Philly rarely comes to mind when you think of either blues or jazz. On the night that I visited Warmdaddy's there was a blues act which hailed from San Francisco, CA. This band, fronted by EC Scott, was an incredibly talented blues act that primarily played original tunes, but sprinkled in gems like Little Wing (Jimi Hendrix) to constantly keep the crowd guessing. When I first approached the bartender to order myself a frothy pint, I almost fell off my bar stool when I was informed that they only had 2 beers on tap. Thankfully the bartender put my mind at ease when he rattled off a list of more bottled beers than you could ever ask to have available. I can't help it but to me, there really is nothing like a nice cold good draught and red hot blues. Every Tuesday night there is an "Open Blues Jam" starting at 8PM where you can bring your vintage 1964 Fender Stratocaster and show everyone your guitar chops. If you don't have any musical talent, voyeurs are offered bottles of Miller Genuine Drafts for the low-low price of $2. On the First Wednesday of every month, Warmdaddy's has a special "Crab Fest" dinner special for $22.95 per person, which includes various crab dishes, shrimp and a pitcher of beer. After you're done feasting there are Zydeco Dance Lessons to work off the calories. Rest assured that if you're only interested in the dance lessons, pay the cover and you're learning the dance moves. Because of Warmdaddy's location in Olde City, it has become a "definite" on my list of pubs and bars to visit when I'm in the area. I'm sure that once you've visited Warmdaddy's, you'll put this establishment on your short list too. |
