| Toad's resides just around the corner from Conshohocken stalwarts: The Boathouse and The Great American Pub. Ever since this
reviewer has been visiting Conshy, Toad's has been a subtle presence that rarely garnered much attention.
To make a long review short, Toad's can be best described as a "college bar without the college." The beer is served in plastic cups, the crowd looks like they are of college age, but probably don't attend and the walls are covered in beer company swag. The layout of the place is fairly straightforward. The bar occupies the entire left hand wall with the remaining room filled in with tall-boy tables. Towards the back of the room, there is another room off to the right fill with just tables/chairs, a few video games and a make-shift stage. The highlights of the beer taps are: Warsheiner, Coors Light, Miller Lite, Yuengling Lager, Newcastle and Guinness. The disappointing part here is that the brews were served up in plastic cups ala Frat Party. We waited so long to get served, I thought it was up to me to hop behind the bar, pump the keg and serve myself. That's OK, I thing the bartenders were eyeballing one of the many TV's that are mounted around the bar. I think a re-run of VIP was on the tube. Look at the photo above, if you will. The façade clearly advertises a "Billiard Room" and "Cigar Lounge." I'll be damned if either of these rooms exist. Maybe I was delusional from the plastic cup interacting with my beer, but there were no pool tables and no room primed for cigar smoking. I can only assume that the back room must have served as a Billiard Room and Cigar at some point in time. Our advice: take down the signs! On our particular visit, Sean Ryan was the solo live act. As we watched this guy play his "out-of-tune" acoustic guitar, I had flashbacks of being back at a college dorm and this guy was the only person on the floor with a guitar. The guy would start songs and not be able to finish them - lame! He was in a back room of Toad's and it was no mystery why the only patrons there (aside from the Phillytown Crew) were his friends. When you've had your fill of Toad's, two more polished pubs are around the corner: The Great American Pub and The Boathouse. Oh what the heck, just park across the street from Toad's at the communal parking lot and just hit those places. |
