What I’d Do To Improve the Place:

Get a sign on the exterior of the Wyndham Hotel advertising your presence. Philadelphians love their steak, but don't have the patience for finding a place.

Check Out Shula's on the Web

If your are a Miami Dolphin's fan, you probably already know that their  ex-coach Don Shula runs his own line of Sports Bars and Steak Houses across the country. As of March 2001, Philadelphia has one of each.

This particular review will focus on the Shula's Steak House located at the Wyndham Hotel in Center City. This Shula's offers a top notch steak house and a quaint cigar bar all in one.

The theme of Shula's Steakhouse is the infamous 1972 Miami Dolphin's "Perfect Season" where they won every regular season game, playoffs and Super Bowl. Yeah, I know, they only played a 14 game regular season back then (they play a 16 game season now), but it's still a feat that hasn't been repeated since.

First off, the place is a Steak House to rival some of the major meat players in Philly. The Shula's Steak House chain has been ranked among the Top Ten Steak Houses in America since 1991. Sure Philly is a haven for carnivores but steak stalwarts like Prime Rib, Smith & Wollensky, Ruth's Chris Steak House and Morton's should be a little nervous. Practically every cut of meat is available: 12 oz. Filet Mignon ($33), 32 oz. Prime Rib ($31), 24 oz. Porterhouse, 22 oz. Cowboy Cut, 20 oz. Kansas City Sirloin and  a 16 oz. New York Sirloin. If you don't like red meat they also have chicken, salmon, lamb chops, Mahi-Mahi and Lobster on the pigskin, or eh, menu.  That's right, there's no fancy menu here, the a la carte menu is printed on an Official NFL Football complete with rubber tee.

If you bring a really big appetite you can order the 48 oz. Porterhouse Steak ($66). If you finish it, you become a member of the 48 Oz Club. What does that get you? Your name engraved on a plaque displayed at the entrance, your name is added to the list of ten thousand  48 Oz. Club members on DonShula.com,  and you get an autographed picture of Coach Shula. But then again, isn't bragging rights and a story of decadent gluttony a fringe benefit that no one can really put a price on?

But the Shula's Steak House appeal goes beyond frou frou aesthetics of fine linen cloths and leather-back chairs. It offers the sports fan a chance to relive the Dolphin's 1972 Season through black and white pictures framed in gold leaf that show candid shots of players, coaches and the experience like no other story could be told. If that is not enough, the menu's are printed on official NFL Footballs and the bar area has a replica of the Lombardi Trophy (Super Bowl Trophy) behind glass.

After you've eaten, you can head over to the bar area and enjoy a stogie while you listen to the sounds of Sinatra and Tony Bennet. Evidently these two crooners are favorites of Coach Shula since they were the only musical selections piped in from above. Over in this area, they've got a beautiful oak bar, high-top bar tables and leather couches/chairs for relaxing. A couple TV's over the bar, some complementary issues of Cigar Aficionado, more B&W pictures and game balls from the 1972 Season provide all of the ambiance you will need as you soak up the sports history.

PROS:
In a city where they are trying to ban smoking, Shula's is Cigar Friendly

Complimentary Valet or Self Park in the garage underneath the Wyndham Hotel for a 3 hour maximum.

Finish a 48oz Porterhouse and you get your name on DonShula.com

Get the BBQ Shrimp Appetizer - they're huge and taste out-of-this-world.

CONS:
Dinner can be expensive, but you are getting Certified Angus.

Lombardi Trophy behind glass but not labeled - probably a copyright on the name. The Football Challenged and Foreign Visitors probably won't even notice.
