Black is the attire for the night if you are going to roll to Saint Jack's in Olde City. From all of the "One-Eyed Jack" references on the exterior, I expected the place to have a casino-type atmosphere. This was not the case. You enter Saint Jack's into a single room containing a bar to the left and booths along the right hand wall. The bronze bar can accommodate about 20 patrons. Beers
on tap include Kiran (Japanese), Paulaner Hefe-Weizen, Guinness, Bass and Coors Light. Towards the back of the room is a unisex bathroom which has a permanent line on a Friday or Saturday night. During our visit to Saint Jack's, all of the seats at the bar were filled and all of the booths were taken. It was very difficult to migrate to the "terlet" located at the back of the bar.
But hey, while you're in line you can take a moment and admire some of the interesting decor which surrounds you. On the first floor there are a few odd paintings and pictures on the walls. You’ve got a huge (4’ x 8’) painting of a Gorilla reclining on a sofa.
On the wall by the unisex bathroom, there is another gorilla painting (small about 18”x 24”). Additional photograph’s on the walls can only be described as “art.” In one photo there is a shirtless man with all sorts of piercing's all over his chest. Two other photo’s feature a
nude woman bent over touching her toes, the perspective of the camera is of her rear end. One of the photo’s she is merely touching her toes, in the other photo she has a big bull’s eye painted on her ass. If I had a better Liberal Arts education, I’d probably be able to find the deep
metaphorical meaning of these photos, but rather than venture a guess, I’ll leave the interpretation to the experts. There is an upstairs to Saint Jack’s. This area contains a large bar and a few tables and chairs scattered about under the windows that overlook 3rd Street. If you’re looking for a draft beer up here you are out of luck.
There are no taps on the second floor of Jacks. It’s bottled brews or martini time if you decide to stay up here. Techno-european dance music is pumped in – with this sort of ambiance (people dressed in black, nude photographs on the walls, European music, a painting of a
Gorilla on the wall) you might get the feeling that you are in the green room of Sprockets – “Touch my monkey painting, TOUCH IT!” |
