| Reed's Centre Square is about 5 - 7 miles down the road from The Bent Elbo. There have been many a night when nothing was going on at The Elbo and I headed down the road to Reeds (and
vice-versa), to continue the debauchery. Reeds is essentially one huge room delineated only by two bars, a stage (for live acts) and a dining area filled with booths.
Reed's scores high marks in my book since that keep about 15 beers on tap at all times. Of course the taps run the gambit from Guinness, to Dundee's Honey Brown to Coors Light, but hey you've gotta respect such a collection. The main attraction to this suburban oasis is it's ability to attract the most popular live bands of the Philadelphia Region to their stage every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. There isn't a bad spot in the house to observe the performers since the stage (which is fairly large for a bar of Reed's size) is located in the far right hand corner of the building, with nothing in the way to obstruct your view. Directly in front of the stage is a large dance floor that comes in handy between sets when the in-house DJ spins dance records and turns on the disco balls and lights. The clientele at Reeds ranges from College co-eds to 30 somethings all out to have a good time. I can honestly say that in all of the times that I've been to Reeds (definitely into the double digits, maybe even triple digits), I've never seen any patron get out of hand or have to be forcibly escorted out of the bar. It is this sort of crowd that goes to Reed's, the sort that is out to meet new friends and share pint over some good conversation. Reeds spruced up their dining area a few years ago, and I think it really raised the decorum of the place. Such an area is critical for a fine drinking establishment because it offers a nice respite away from the action if you're in the mood for conversation or even a late night bite to eat. Reed's, unlike so many other bars in the area, does a great job in keeping the place looking great on every visit. When you enter Reed's, immediately to your right is a small little area where tables and chairs are set-up in front of a few video games and pinball machines. The DJ booth is located in this area also. This area never really struck me as "thee spot" in the bar to hang out in. If I could change one thing about Reed's it would be to evict the games in this area and just fill it with either tables and chairs or even swank it up a bit with some oversized chairs or sofas. This area doesn't detract from Reed's at all, but if you visit, this area seems out of place and doesn't gel with the rest of the bar. Parking is never a problem at Reeds. They have an enormous parking lot surrounding the facility on all four sides. Sure you might have to park in a spot a couple hundred yards away from the door, but that only happens on nights when one of the area's top live acts are performing. If you do get stuck parking out in the boonies, just do like I do and keep reminding yourself either how great the band will be or which of the 15 draft brews you will be throwing back in 5 minutes time. |
