I got to say I am a bit biased, as I am friends with the Bonk family. However, I'll try to stay objective. Bonk's Bar is a corner bar in Port Richmond, yes. If you judge the whole neighborhood by Richmond Street, the street the bar is on, yes, you mght be a little scared if you aren't from Philly. However, as a resident, I feel that I must tell you, even residents don't like Richmond Street. THe rest of the neighborhood is neat rowhouses. Anywho...
Bonk's is a place to go if you like crabs and seafood. Yes, they have small mugs, if you plan on drinking alot, feel free to get a small or large pitcher, it'll work out for you in the long run beer-wise and cost-wise. The crabs are cooked with a family secret recipe, so sometimes they take awhile. The shrimp can while away the time, as they are also cooked in the homemade recipe. They are a favorite of mine. The cheesesteaks are a decent size also and go well with crab fries (which aren't as hardcore as Chickie and Pete's and way cheaper).
If you are looking for a place to drink microbrews or cosmopolitans (which one of my freinds once ordered and Tommy, one of the owners, just stared at her), go downtown. If you feel like eating crabs and drinking some beers, go to Bonk's. Oh, and if you are going on a weekend, go EARLY. It tends to get very crowded on the weekends. If you just can't stand the waiting, food is also available to go.
