I had a visitor in from Atlanta, who grew up in the Jersey suburbs. She had not been back to Philly in 9 - 10 years. We had been to a high-end restaurant in the area, and just happened to stumble in to Anthony's for a nightcap. It was a great Philly experience for her. Mixed age crowd, cheap pitcher of Yuengling Lager, able to talk to each other without shouting, friendly locals that we also spoke to, and a fun juke-box where someone played Kate Smith's "God Bless America". People started singing along - especially this one guy in a Flyer's Jersey. My friend's reaction: "This is so Philly", said with a big smile!
I'm heading back there this weekend w/ a friend who also moved out of Philadelphia 20 years ago. I'd like him to have the same reaction! |
