Location: Delaware Ave, Phila, PA
Phone: (215) 423-8116 Overall Rating (1 to 10): 7 What I’d Do To Improve the Place: Geography check: Maui is in Hawaii, and yet there are all sorts of Australian swag plastered all over the joint. Maybe there is a Foster's connection, but it's definitely not Hawaiian. Convert Margarita Cafe into a mini-brewpub. How about Macadamia nuts at the bar and coconut bikini's on the waitresses. As the great thespian Butthead once said: "huh, huh, huh, that would be cool." |

Because of recent problems "keeping the peace" in and
around this bar, the PA Liquor Control Board closed Maui. It is uncertain if
new owners will take over or the LCB will relent. Until then Maui is closed.
There was a time in the early 1990's when Maui was just another Delaware Avenue warehouse/pier converted into a dance club. Back then Maui consisted of a single large room with 4 bars in each corner of the building. A raised dance floor was in the center of the room and there were a few pool tables added for good measure. Off of the original warehouse, spreading out into the pier, they added an outdoor volleyball court, complete with sand. Then they added a two large covered bar areas on the outside, along with an amphitheater for live acts to perform under the stars. The evolution continued and a smaller disco/dance building was added in front of the main warehouse area, to offer retro music to dance to. All of the above still exists, except for some slight modifications. A portion of the main warehouse has been carved out to accommodate something called the Margarita Cafe. In this room there are dueling piano players where patrons can sing along, request tunes or just sit back and watch the other drunken patrons provide the entertainment. The Cafe also offers a nice selection of margarita's to imbibe while singing "Margaritaville." The front dance room has practically doubled in size and now is about the same size as the main room's dance area. The music in this room is house type mixes, a slight change in flavor than what is available in the main dancing area. Adjacent to this front dance room is a patio with a bar in the center. During my visit this outside patio was a ghost-town compared to the volleyball bar/bar area at the back end of the complex. The brews are your average garden variety: Heineken, Miller Lite, Coor's Lite. When you're trolling the Delaware Ave bars, you're not going to come across any epiphany's on tap, it's just not their nature. On the weekend nights, Maui often hosts a local live band to break up the monotony of spinning records. If you do have a craving for doing the dance thing, don't despair, there is always one or more rooms/areas pumping out the jams. The colossal nature of Maui, makes it an ideal place for a group of friends to visit since it offers a little of everything in entertainment: dancing, volleyball, occasional live music, outdoors and drinking on the Delaware. Since Maui is actually in Hawaii, it escapes me why there are kangaroos, boomerangs and other Australian swag plastered around the entire complex. The best explanation for this is a of promotion for Foster's Australian beer. It would be nice to see Maui expand on the Hawaiian theme. There appears to be no real dress code. You can visit Maui during the summer months and it would not be uncommon to see some of the females wearing hot pants and a bikini tops. Ain't nothing wrong with that! Likewise for the ladies, some of the male visitors counter the bikini tops with muscle shirts. To say that Maui is a "meet market" (or rather meat market) would be an understatement. Most of the clientele are shaking their moneymaker's like nobody's business. Down on the dance floor, it gets hot, sweaty and sometimes R-rated, but don't let it scare ya, it's all in good fun. If things get too hot, you can always take a breather outside or chill out with a Margarita in the Cafe. |
