What I’d Do To Improve the Place: Nothing. It's fabulous the way that it is. |
| My first go at the khYber was back in college. We went there to see great bands like the Dead Milkmen and the local band Hairy Phlegm Ball. The khYber's small stage area provides a very intimate location to see big time bands like the Dead
Milkmen or They Might Be Giants while providing a good venue for local bands like Hairy Phlegm Ball. I do not know if they are still around, but you have to admire a band where the lead singer puts a toilet bowl lid on his head to sing a song titled "Tidybowl Man". You can just guess
the lyrics. The khYber was also the place where I was introduced to Rouge beers, though they do not carry that label there anymore.
The reason why I have not been back to the khYber in so long is because many of the people that I go out with do not like the looks of the place. This time I was able to get them to go along through the use of God's gift to man-alcohol. When you get people drunk enough they'll go anywhere for the next drink. We showed up at the khYber and it was packed. As you enter the establishment you are in the bar area which has that old run down look to it. Off to the right is the stage area where the live music plays. You can always get a glimpse of the band as you pass the large outside window. The people at the khYber are not your clean cut Americans. We are talking a lot of black, colorful hair, interesting facial hair configurations, and visible piercing and tattoos. It is definitely a cool place to hang though the patrons might scare away the close minded-they are harmless. The patrons also include the artistic wannabes who think they are the real thing because they tousled up their conservative haircut and don the black clothing-it's cool, we are all out for a good time. What I want to get across is don't pass up this place on looks alone. Now if your Delaware Ave-then you should pass it up and head to the Continental or Envy. The place was packed, my friends were drunk, we needed to get to the bar and get recharged. In a tight bar where its shoulder to shoulder its hard to move. Plan on getting jousted, its all part of the sport. I took point and tried to find a path to the bar. I bumped into a beautiful baby, I almost spilled metal-face's drink, I got close and personal with Rastaboy as I slid past, and Sid Vicious tried to give us more space, but we still rubbed shoulders. I get to poser-boy and he gives me attitude. What a f*cking asshole. So here's a few tips for going to any bar in Philly: 1. If you decide to go to a popular place, don't get upset when it's so packed that people are jostling you to get by. It's all part of the game. 2. The majority of people who dress in black, have colorful hair, piercings, or tattoos are not violent or mean people. They are artistic and respect people for who they are. When posing as these people don't act like a tough-guy. 3. Don't act tough in front of your woman. It does not impress them, it only makes you look like a Neanderthal. If the woman likes that shit-dump her ass. 4. You and everyone else are out for a good time. Work to achieve that end. - As reviewed by The Nutty Irishman His other reviews include: Oscar's Tavern, The Samson Street Oyster House, Maggie O'Neal's, Barnaby's, Shampoo, Rio, The Great American Pub, The Boat House & Valley Forge Brewing Company. |
