This review pertains to the old location of Grape Street Pub. Notwithstanding, the GSP is a great local place to check out up and coming bands from the Philly area. The Grape Street Pub is located towards the middle of Main Street, oddly enough, on Grape Street. As the sign that hangs outside of the Grape Street Pub's door says "Manayunk's Best Live Music." I would tend to agree, especially since none of any of the other bars in Manayunk, even come close to offering live acts as interesting as the GSP. It's always a sort of Musical Pot Luck when you head over to the GSP. I've been to the GSP a number of times and I would add to that sign the Best Variety of Music in Manayunk. On each of my visits, I witnessed a Reggae Band, an Alternative (Henry Rollins type) band and a Blues band (K Floor were incredible). You enter the bar and you're immediately in the main bar area which overlooks a stage where the live acts strut their stuff. The big bar can probably accommodate a good 20 - 25 patrons. Only a few choices for brews on tap, but the GSP more than makes up for it by offering about 15 different bottled beers. My brew of choice when I'm at the GSP is a bottle of Newcastle, a fine British nut-brown ale. There is a second floor that was refurbished in in summer of 2001. Gone are the dimly lit rooms and the clique-type atmosphere. Up here is where they often place DJ's as opposed to the live acts downstairs. If you're into live music and you're in the Manayunk area, give the Grape Street Pub a try. If the music isn't to your liking, you can always leave and go to one of the many other bars/pubs that exist in the Manayunk area. But you'll never know what you get at the GSP unless you give 'em a try. |
