| One of the newest dance clubs to arrive on the Philly scene is Envy. Envy opened in late spring of 1999. This club is three floors of dancing in the heart of Olde City. Here you can dance, eat, dance, chill-out in big comfy sofas,
dance and get a pretty good whiskey sour.
The first floor of Envy is one-half dining room and one-half bar/dance floor. The dining area contains a couple of booths and about 10 tables with chairs. The food isn't bad either: chicken fingers and stuffed mushrooms were pretty good. The bar on the first floor has a clean, avant garde look about it. It can accommodate about 15 swanky patrons. Forward of the bar is a small dance area where a DJ is on staff to keep the crowd moving. During one of my visits to Envy, the first floor was cordoned off for a private party. Don't be disappointed if you're ushered upstairs, the real sin of Envy is the second floor. On the second floor, off to the left of the stairs, is a huge dance floor (about 30' X 50'). Bordering the dance floor on the far wall is a bar that runs its entire length. The lovely ladies behind the bar are some of the hottest barkeeps in town. It was difficult not thinking sinful thoughts as I waited for my whiskey sour; no envy but a little lust and a smidgen of avarice occurring in my pants, but that's a whole other issue. The real Envy magic happens here on the dance floor. The dance music is "house." - not a big fan because Envy's DJ's won't spin notable dance tunes like Cher's Believe, C&C Music Factory or the latest Fatboy Slim re-mix. In spite of this, the DJ's keep the beat going and have no problem keeping asses on the dance floor. The crowd is hot, the women are shaking what their mama's gave them and on the weekend nights the floor is so packed that touching & groping is inevitable. The other area of the second floor contains a lounge with a small bar to keep the lounge lizards inebriated. The lounge contains big, comfy sofas and on the walls are handwritten words synonymous with the word Envy. The writing on the wall is interesting since its day-glow paint illuminates well in this dark room. The lounge is a big hang out for the so called beautiful people. Up another flight of stairs is a voyeurs' paradise. A balcony overlooks the dance floor and is the place to be while you're checking out who you'll be taking home tonight. They keep the DJ up here behind a cage - in the event that one of his re-mixes incites a riot. Also on the third floor are bathrooms, tables/chairs and another bar. When your club is named for one of the seven deadly sins, you're going to make the decor a bit ominous. In the center of the third floor balcony are four stone colored mannequin's. They are laying face down on four girders in the shape of a cross overlooking the dance floor: on opening night I thought they were real people, they were so realistic! Creepy stuff. The Envious crowd is a nice mix of mid-20somethings to mid-30somethings. Be forewarned and bring your "A-Game" because the crowd is fashion conscious, looking "da-bomb" and out to show some skin on the dance floor. It is not unusual to pay a $10 cover to grace the hallowed halls of Envy. To this reviewer, that's a bit steep for a dance club in the middle of Olde City, where most bars are free. |
