What I’d Do To Improve the Place:

Enforce dress code better. There were a few people who got in wearing jeans and baseball caps.

Visit Egypt on the Web Here!

It's almost embarrassing to say, but after 8 years of hitting the bar scene in and around Philly, Thanksgiving Weekend of 1999 was this reviewer's first visit to the club experience known as Egypt.  The sheer size of Egypt is impressive. As far as the fire marshal is concerned, the place can legally hold over 2000 patrons (at least that's what it says on the fire permit they have hanging behind the cashier)! If you've come here to dance and show your A-game you'll appreciate the extra space.

You enter Egypt through the doors shown above and proceed through a metal detector, on towards the cashier. The lengths that Egypt has gone through to ensure the safety of its clientele are second to none. Around a bend, past the coat check area and into an area containing the first of 4 bars. Moving deeper into the club is a little island (for patrons to belly up to and rest their drinks, another bar (seats about 40) the dance floor and finally another bar (also seats about 40).  Filling in the spaces around the dance floor are upright tables and booths from which you can enjoy the perspiring clientele shaking their asses and showing some skin down on the dance floor.

The dance floor could probably squeeze 200 people combine on the upper and lower dance floors. One dance floor is about 3 feet higher than the lower. On opposite ends of the dance floor are 2 risers which dancing employee's of Egypt mount and show the "rank and file" how to really kick up their heels. These "professional" dancers aren't afraid to shed some articles of clothing as they heat up, so be prepared. Don't get too excited, the dancers don't show any of their "bit's and pieces" - strictly PG-13.

In this dancing area, the DJ is mixing up tunes on the fly and you'll be lucky to recognize anything that he is playing. When I first arrived at Egypt, the DJ was spinning some Madonna, but from that point forward the tunes were high energy dance material. This room has an incredible sound system. The DJ's at Egypt are able to crank up the bass levels to unbelievable lows. When the DJ gets really going, you can literally feel the music in your nether-regions while waiting in line outside of Egypt.

There is a whole other club at Egypt called Disco 2000. Disco 2000 is sectioned off from the larger club and they have their own DJ spinning more recognizable music. Upon entering Disco 2000, I expected to hear music more in line with the next millennium: industrial, house or maybe remixed disco tunes made to sound futuristic. Ah, but I twas (yes twas, it's Olde English) mistaken. The music in Disco 2000 was all recognizable and closer to late 70's early 80's tunes. This room is a  nice respite when you are looking for a change of pace from the main room in Egypt.

Egypt does a great job of integrating the Egyptian theme into the club.  Behind one of the bars is a 10 foot tall head of a Sphinx. There are also a few Egyptian sarcophaguses standing on end adding to the ambiance.  As a nod of ingenuity, they've mounted inverted lights with streamers floating upwards (by some sort of fan) which simulate torches.

The cover charge at Egypt is $7, which is not bad for gaining access to two dance clubs: Egypt and Disco 2000. Parking in this area of Delaware Ave is difficult. Valet parking is available and there is a small parking area located just south of Egypt on Delaware Avenue in front of the Public Storage facility.

Make a note that Thursday Night is underage night, where no liquor is served, the patrons are 17 - 24 year olds and the place is jammed. Egypt is one of the few clubs in Philly that opens its doors to the underage crowd.

Even-though the dance scene is not really this reviewers forte, the sound system, the two clubs, the variety of music, and the Egyptian theme is impressive. If you are into the dance club scene, you'll have to put Egypt on your short list of places to visit.

PROS:
Big, big, big. The place is legally able to hold over 2000 people!

Two large dance rooms under one roof give you some choices.

Upscale dance crowd.

Egyptian theme through-out.

CONS:
Only a couple of beers on tap.

Their bottled beer selection leaves something to be desired.
