| Upon first pass you might incorrectly assume that Café Spice is a coffee bar. Well, it has all of the markings: name ("Café Spice"), all front doors/windows open up (café style) and 2nd Street is in dire need of an honest
to goodness caffeine fix amidst all the liquor. But, alas, Café Spice is a tré sheik Indian Bistro.
Through the doors and up the Café Spice ramp, you're faced with a decision: head to the back for dinner or "park it" up front at the bar. The dining room is wall to wall tables and chairs. The interior decorator went for an orange and red motif on the walls, squares within squares are the pattern. The menu is chuck full of Indian cuisine which is primarily vegetarian. For the novice's, they offer a sampler platter, that way you can just pick and choose your favorite Indian dishes with a multitude of sauces for dipping. The bar is nothing elaborate, it seats about 15 patrons. From every seat at the bar you're able to catch a view of the sidewalk. The tables by the windows open up for the drinking patrons as long as the dining patrons haven't laid claim to them. In our humble opinion, the tables by the windows are the choice seats for ogling both patrons and passersby. Hey, besides the DJ, there really isn't much entertainment here - make your own fun. Although India is not really known for their extensive selection of beers, Café Spice does offer one: Kingfisher Premium Lager. It's not a bad brew if you have never tried it. You're not likely to find it at many other places in the city, so drink up. There is nothing on tap, so the remaining brews are all bottled; the standard Philly beers. Finally a bar has stolen my idea and combined 2 nightlife necessities into one: the DJ Booth is also the coat room. Check your coat, request a song - it just goes together like honey and mustard. Well, actually, I think they were short on space so they wedged the DJ into the coat room so he wasn't in the way. Our guess is that his hands were too full spinning records to hang coats...but curiously enough, there was a "tip jar" nearby. I guess if you liked the way he mixed the Euro-House music, you could throw him a fiver - these records aren't going to spin themselves people. Maybe it was coincidental, but all of the bartenders, waitresses and DJ were dressed in black and they sported jet black hair. Who knows, the staff could have been all related. I just wouldn't go there expecting a job if I was a blonde - it would just screw up the whole Feng Shui of the place. Café Spice rubs elbows with the Plough and the Stars, and across the street is Brownies Pub, and the khYber. So after you've had your fill of Indian hospitality, other Old City haunts are readily available.
