Phone: (610) 649-8389 Overall Rating (1 to 10): 6 What I’d Do To Improve the Place: For the love of God, someone clean the upstairs carpeting. The floor was so sticky from spilled booze, that by the time I made my way to the bar, I was barefoot!

| Back before there was a such a thing as the Internet, Brownies 23 East was known as The 23 East Cabaret. Back then The 23 East was the sort of establishment that attracted up-and-coming rock bands that played original
music. These days Brownies 23 East plays host to cover bands that specialize in mimicking the latest Y100 Top 20 Hits. "Not that there's anything wrong with that," especially since live music, to me, is always better than a DJ spinning records. All of the acts that I have seen
here were well worth the price of admission (usually $5 - very reasonable).
The basic set-up of Brownies 23 East is a downstairs area and an upstairs balcony. The downstairs area contains a bar located directly in front of the stage. You have a clear view of the stage at practically every one of the 30 (or so) bar stools. In SRO situations there is a rail along the back wall behind the bar for you to stand by, so you have a place to put your brew while you put the moves on that groovy blonde seated next to that meathead at the bar. In the spacious upstairs balcony, there is a bar and tall tables to procrastinate by. I've been to the 23 East many times in my professional career and I wouldn't always count the balcony area to be open. They often close off the area for bachelorette parties. One thing that struck me while I was cavorting upstairs was that the carpeting was very sticky and in need of a good washing. I walked from one side of the balcony to the other and I thought I had gum stuck to the bottom of my Skechers! It was quite an experience. The clientele that frequent Brownies 23 East are college-age folks, drawing from St. Josephs and other colleges in the vicinity. It is pretty standard stuff when it comes to the brews that they have on tap, so there is not much to talk about here. When it comes to partaking in a frothy brew, a bar/pub's draft selection has to inspire me. Sure they proffer Guinness and Sam Adams to the thirsty patrons, but it wouldn't hurt to see some exotic beer on tap. Parking is very ample around Brownies 23 East. Just follow that signs and there is a parking lot about a block away on Cricket Avenue. The nice thing about this lot is that there is a little Irish bar called "Annie's," right down Cricket Ave (in the opposite direction of Lancaster Avenue) if you are looking for a place to have a night-cap after Brownies 23 East. |
