What I’d Do To Improve the Place:

Get better beer on the taps. Killarney's Red Lager is about as Irish as a chapped ass. Support the local brews: Flying Fish, Yards and Victory!

From the outside, she don't look like much, but on the inside, Bonk's gets better. Through the front door, you're in the bar area. The bar in this room looks like the very same bar that your grandfather bellied up to years ago. Within a few blocks of the Delaware River, it's not hard to imagine dockworkers making a pit-stop at Bonk's after a long day on the piers back when Port Richmond was a bustling centre of Philly industry.

To put it simply, they don't make bars like this anymore. This wooden structure contains drawers with intricate wood carvings and cast iron bottle cap removers that are in the image of animals and clowns. The choice of taps are a little disappointing. Mass produced brews occupy each of the 6 handles.

In all likelihood, you're going to Bonk's for the crabs. A dozen will set you back $18. They're bigger blue claws than you would find in any back bay of New Jersey. If you roll down to Bonk's you might want to order up the crab fries too. Sure they might look like normal fries with Old Bay seasoning on them, but they kick-it-up-a-notch with some extra spices  thrown in that will have you reaching for your drink after each mouthful.

I've got mixed feelings about the beer mugs. These glasses may hold 10 oz,  at best. Granted, you're only paying about $1.50 per fill-up, but you're wanting a refill every 5 minutes. My bet is that Bonk's conducted a psychological study (probably in conjunction with Univ of Penn - damn Ivy Leaguers) that determined the smaller mugs provide a larger profit in the long run. Rookie drinkers can leave with bragging rights saying they "put-away" 12 beers. The mug glasses are pretty funny looking: thick hollow glass bottom, then about an inch of glass before the hollowed out part of the mug.

What to say of the Bonk's ambiance? Well, the walls have their fair share of beer company swag: neon signs and mirrors.  One wall is decorated with various pictures of the Three Stooges. Being a Stooges fan, it's hard to knock a place for this. The guys are classics. In the back room of Bonk's are sit-down tables and more swag. One wall has a couple pictures of famous Philadelphian's, Ex-Prez Clinton and a family history of the Bonk family name.

As mentioned, the crabs are a main attraction, so don't go here expecting a big meet (or meat) market. There seemed to be mainly couples and guys watching the Flyer's game. It's a neighborhood bar in the simplest terms, so just go there and get some crabs already.

PROS:

Good place for crabs.

Easy Access: right off Allegheny Exit of I-95.

CONS:
Not a meet/meat market - just go here to watch a Flyer's game or to get some crabs.

Industrial Neighborhood - might scare some country folk.

Beer served up in Mini-mugs. I've been to strip clubs that serve up the butter in bigger glasses.
