The Boat House is a great pub right down the street from the Great American Pub. With these two pubs in such close proximity, you can do a mini pubcrawl and not even loose the taste of beer in your mouth.
The Boathouse is like so many other rowhouse bars. The bar is on the left side and in the back is an area for eating. The pub is small but does not seem to get as crowded. I also like the crowd in the Boathouse much better that the crowd in the Great American Pub. The patrons of the Boathouse are
not pretentious like their neighbors in the Great American Pub. Of course there is a flow of patrons between the two pubs but the most flow is from the younger people trying to look important by having places to jump back and forth between. The patrons of the Boathouse seem to be a bit older than
the patrons of the Great American Pub. The Great American Pub seems to host all the newbies.
The Boathouse contains a lot of good beers. It was at the Boathouse that I fell in love with Red Hook ESB. I am a big ESB fan, especially Fullers ESB (which you can sometimes get at the Dickens Inn). Besides Red Hook, the Boathouse carries many more good beers including Guinness and Boddingtons.
Overall this pub is very good, but its shortcoming is that it often gets too crowded and too loud to have a good conversation (unless you like yelling into your friend's ear). This does not provide any entertainment value. For example, if you go to a place like the Bent
Elbo, you can not even hear yourself think while the band is playing, but at least you have something entertaining to watch. Unfortunately, the Boathouse only offers a DJ blaring Y100 (Top Forty) music. So when the music gets too loud (or you just can't stand it anymore) all you can do is sip
your drink or move on. The Magic 8-ball says: Move On.
