Location: Northern Liberties, Phila, PA
Phone:(215) 238-0660 Overall Rating (1 to 10): 8 What I’d Do To Improve the Place: The second floor bar is a sight to behold for any one who is a fan of hand carved wood. With a full complement of taps up there and a live acoustic act that would be thee place to be. How about a dart board or shuffleboard table. |
| In case you haven't noticed, there is a revitalization occurring in the the Northern Liberties section of the city. Even-though Liberties has occupied its present location for 5 years, nearby bars like Poor
Henry's, the 700 Club and Standard Tap have sprung up in just the past year.
If the picture above doesn't pique your interest in Liberties, I don't know what will. Traveling down 2nd street towards Spring Garden, Liberties almost jumps out at you. The brick façade, the old fashioned lamppost and the "mini-me" version of the Statue of Liberty separates Liberties from the rest of the storefronts along 2nd Street. For a point of reference, Liberties is a storefront away from the corner of 2nd and Fairmount Aves. You enter the front doors of Liberties into a vestibule adjacent to the bar area. The bar area contains booths along the left wall and the bar along the right. The bar can seat about 20 patrons. A lot of drinking establishments sacrifice floor space for bar and table space, but not so here. Even when all of the seats at the bar are occupied, there is plenty of room for people to congregate and meander-by on their way to the back dining room and bathrooms. The bar is a beautiful old fashioned structure comprised of wood and brass. The word "Liberties" is tiled out on the mosaic floor around the bar - nice touch. Overhead, an intricate bronze colored tin sheet ceiling looks down on a header of taps that doesn't disappoint. The brewed bounty contains: John Courage, Sam Adams, Harp, Yuengling, Hardcore Cider, Bass, Guinness, Miller Lite and Coors Light. Beyond the bar area is a dining room filled with about 20 tables and chairs. This room also contains a stairwell that leads up to a second floor. A ladies room, another bar and a meeting room occupies this floor. The bar on the second floor is truly a feast for the eyes. The craftsmanship on the wood is impressive. It's a shame that patrons will only get a peek of this bar if they make the trek upstairs. This bar is only manned when the meeting room is used. The P-town crew arrived on the scene at Liberties right after work on a Wednesday Night. The crowd was decidedly geriatric. It looked like this group of fellas might have just got done work also and they were finishing off their pints before going back to their respective "old ladies." But as the night progressed, the place filled-up with 20somethings & early 30somethings. But regardless of age, all patrons of Liberties were all out for a good craic. If you're in this neck of the woods, give it a try.
