700 Club 700 N. 2nd Street, Philadelphia, PA 19123 |

Location: Northern Liberties, Phila., PA
Phone: (215) 413-3181 Overall Rating (1 to 10): 5 What I’d Do To Improve the Place: Issue "Nice" pills to everyone at the door. The straight-laced P-town crew was getting eye-balled, like we had gone through the "looking glass" and was about to be bounced back. Maybe flowers or happy paintings on the walls would brighten-up everyone's mood.

| It would be too obvious to start this review by saying something like "No, the religious right hasn't decided to expand their horizons by opening up shop in Northern Liberties" or
"Don't expect to see Pat Robertson tending bar at this Northern Liberties Bar." Nah, we've done all that already.
What this 700 Club is, is a local hangout for 20somethings that enjoy a quirky atmosphere. If I were to describe the 700 Club scene, picture this: Indie Crowd, horn rimed glasses, plain walls, decent taps, female bartender (in sweatpants & half-shirt - very cute) and music that sounds like it's right off the soundtrack to the TV show, Twin Peaks. The 700 Club is more of a hang-out, than a bar. The P-town crew got the feeling that everyone knew each other and if you were an outsider, the patrons looked at you with a disdainful eye. Maybe the locals are patronizing the 700 Club because they want to get away from suburbanites who flock to Northern Liberties bars like Finnigans Wake and Poor Henry's. Maybe the 700 Club is their Alamo and they are bound and determined to stand their ground. Regardless of the aloof attitudes, the 700 Club regulars should realize it was the outsiders who made their neighborhood livable again, by patronizing bars and businesses in the Northern Liberties area. It's a relatively plain bar layout: big brown wooden bar against the right hand wall and a thoroughfare with tables and chairs along the left wall. Odds are , you're either standing or bellied up to the bar since tables are tiny and scarce. The taps at the 700 Club are well represented. Guinness, Bass, Yuengling, Yards (they pull you a pint, not under pressure) and a few others they keep on the rotation. The P-town crew only stayed for one pint, the music and crowd just got too darn strange. Not to worry though, there are a number of other better pubs within a block or two of the 700 Club. Liberties is across the street, Standard Tap is just 2 short blocks north on 2nd Street, The Druid's Keep is a block and a half away on Brown Street and Poor Henry's is around the corner on North American Street.
